## What's New

This release delivers three receiver improvements and two developer tools.

### 1. DTMF decoder follows the D Live setting (RX-10)

RX setup enables the DTMF decoder and its interrupt only when `D Live` is on.
When disabled, the decoder remains off across VFO reconfiguration. DTMF
transmit features, including PTT-ID and DTMF-ID, are unchanged.

### 2. AGC state is restored reliably after spectrum use (RX-11)

RX setup now programs AGC from the requested state instead of relying on a cache
that could miss direct register changes made by the spectrum analyzer. Spectrum
listen mode also freezes and restores AGC as intended.

### 3. RX audio path is re-armed on every receive entry (RX-12)

The centralized `RADIO_SetAudioPath()` restores the BK4819 AF DAC before
unmuting the amplifier, with a 500 µs settling interval. This makes RX audio
initialization consistent after VFO changes and other features that alter chip
audio state, while sequencing mute/unmute to control pops.

The `tools/rx_probe_vfo.ps1` utility reads and audits per-VFO EEPROM records,
and can write corrections to a separate output image without modifying the
input dump. See
[`Documentation/VFO_RX_SILENCE_DIAGNOSTIC.md`](Documentation/VFO_RX_SILENCE_DIAGNOSTIC.md).

### 4. Local build helper repaired (tooling, not firmware)

`tools/build_k5.ps1` now derives the firmware version and feature toggles from the
Makefile, keeping the local build configuration aligned with the project settings.

## What's New

Bug-fix release: full RX (receive) implementation audit of **simplex and repeater operation**, seven
fixes. Complete report: [`Documentation/RX_SIMPLEX_REPEATER_AUDIT.md`](Documentation/RX_SIMPLEX_REPEATER_AUDIT.md).

### 1. Airband no longer "poisons" the next channel (RX-1)
- **Problem:** after listening to the airband, selecting an FM memory channel could keep the radio in **AM**: distorted audio, no CTCSS/DCS decoding and **PTT refused** — the wrong mode was also saved to EEPROM.
- **Cause:** the v7.6.6 airband rule was evaluated in the channel/VFO reload path against the **previous** RX frequency.
- **Fix:** the stored mode is kept as-is there and the airband rule is applied once, after the new frequency is final. Airband still always resolves to AM.

### 2. Transmit always follows the displayed frequency (RX-2, RX-3)
- **RX-3 — no more "old frequency" PTT window:** stepping or entering a frequency retunes RX instantly, but the TX frequency was only refreshed by the deferred save cycle (up to ~500 ms). Keying up inside that window transmitted on the **previous** frequency; TX is now re-derived at PTT time, *before* the band-plan check.
- **RX-2 — impossible offsets are refused, not wrapped:** an offset larger than the RX frequency (e.g. 145.000 MHz with a "−" shift of 999.999 MHz) used to wrap the internal TX frequency to ~42 GHz. It is now marked invalid and the radio just beeps "TX disabled" instead.

### 3. Repeater operation hardened (RX-4, RX-7)
- **RX-4 — stored repeater shift survives the airband:** the "no shift on airband" rule is applied at run time instead of erasing the saved direction, so a programmed "+600 kHz" (or any split) is no longer lost after tuning through 108–137 MHz.
- **RX-7 — repeater tail-tone elimination after a timeout:** when a transmission ends by the **TOT** (time-out timer), releasing PTT now honours `RP STE` exactly like a normal release, so the repeater tail is suppressed instead of being heard.

### 4. Dual-watch squelch and TX-lock icon (RX-5, RX-6)
- **RX-5:** changing `Sql` (menu or F + ▲/▼) now refreshes **both** VFOs, so the second dual-watch VFO no longer keeps the old thresholds.
- **RX-6:** the padlock icon is decided by the actual **TX** frequency, so it appears only when TX is really blocked (cross-band offsets showed a wrong icon before).

---

## Verification

- Host harness (real functions extracted from `radio/radio.c`): **19/19 checks pass** — RX-1/-2/-3/-4 behaviour plus regression cases (±600 kHz, +5 MHz, simplex, 350EN on/off).
- Build: `-Oz -Wall -Wextra -Werror`, LTO + `--gc-sections` — **0 warnings / 0 errors** in both the release define set and the plain Makefile defaults.
- FLASH: **+24 bytes** for the whole patch set, `.bss` unchanged → **no RAM cost**.
- Recommended bench pass (see audit report Appendix A): airband → memory channel stays FM and can TX; step + immediate PTT transmits on the displayed frequency; nonsense offset shows "TX disabled"; stored shift survives an airband round-trip; `Sql` applies to both VFOs; padlock matches real TX capability; TOT + `RP STE` suppresses the tail.

v7.6.10A N7SIX ApeX Edition v7.6.10A2026. 9. 23.
릴리스 노트
**Firmware Version:** v7.6.10A (ApeX Edition)
**Release Date:** September 23, 2026
**Focus:** Spectrum UI/UX
**Target:** UV-K5/K5(8)/K6 version 1
**Status:** Bug fix release — spectrum analyzer display correction.

#### Spectrum Analyzer Fix — Trace Display Correction

- **Fixed spectrum trace displaying too high on startup (F+5)**

  - **Root Cause:** The `RearmRuntimeState()` function was resetting the display dB range to a narrow 31dB window (`dbMin=-128`, `dbMax=-97`) on every spectrum entry, instead of using the intended 80dB range.

  - **Impact:** With the compressed 31dB range, the noise floor (~-120 dBm) was mapped to the middle of the display (Y≈24-34), causing all traces to appear unnaturally high regardless of actual signal strength.

  - **Fix:** Restored the proper 80dB dynamic range (`dbMin=-130`, `dbMax=-50`) in `RearmRuntimeState()` to match the `SpectrumSettings` struct defaults, ensuring weak signals appear at the bottom and only strong signals near the top.

  - **Affected Files:**
    - `app/spectrum.c` — `RearmRuntimeState()` function (lines 1010-1013)

  - **Before:** Trace appeared at Y=15-35 (upper-mid screen) on every spectrum startup
  - **After:** Noise floor correctly displays at Y=36-38 (bottom), strong signals at Y=8-15 (upper area)

#### Version Bump

- **Firmware version updated from v7.6.10 to v7.6.10A**

  - **Changed Files:**
    - `Makefile` — `VERSION_STRING_2` default updated (this is what the build actually reads; the packed image is now named `n7six.ApeX-k5.v7.6.10A.packed.bin`)
    - `tools/defines_aapex.txt` — `VERSION_STRING` and `VERSION_STRING_2` updated
    - `tools/build_k5.ps1` — direct-GCC build defines updated

#### Files Modified

- `app/spectrum.c` — Spectrum analyzer dB range correction
- `Makefile` — Version string default to v7.6.10A
- `tools/defines_aapex.txt` — Version string update to v7.6.10A
- `tools/build_k5.ps1` — Version defines update to v7.6.10A

#### Memory Usage:

```
Memory Region      Used Size  Region Size   % Used
FLASH                61376        61440     99.90%
RAM                   3564         8192     43.51%
```

*(No change vs v7.6.10 — both builds report FLASH 61376 B (99.90%) and RAM 3564 B (43.51%);*

**Date:** September 22, 2026
**Firmware build:** v7.6.10 ApeX Edition
**Focus:** UI/UX modernization (UV-K1 Fusion), 2-point battery calibration, FLASH optimization, and build-ID reporting
**Target:** K5/K5(8)/K6 v1
**Status:** Implemented and validated

---

## Summary

The v7.6.10 update introduces four major changes:

1. **Adopted UI/UX from UV-K1's latest Fusion (Armel, F4HWN)** — modern interface patterns, improved navigation, and visual consistency
2. **2-point Battery Calibration** — accurate voltage-to-percentage estimation across the full discharge curve
3. **Waterfall temporarily disabled** — reclaimed FLASH space; will be re-enabled when space allows
4. **SysInf BUILD page now shows the git commit ID** — the build identity is readable on the radio instead of a hardcoded `N/A`

## Getting Started
- UVTools: https://n7six.github.io/UVTools/
- Compile: `./compile-with-docker.sh ApeX` (Docker) or `win_make.bat` (Windows)

## Key Changes

### 1. Adopted UI/UX from UV-K1's Latest Fusion (Armel, F4HWN)
- **Source:** UI/UX patterns from the UV-K1's Fusion firmware by Armel (F4HWN)
- **Impact:** More intuitive and polished user experience with improved navigation and visual consistency
- **Details:**
  - Menu layouts updated to match modern UV-K1 standard
  - Iconography and interaction flows refined
  - Display rendering optimized for consistency

### 2. 2-Point Battery Calibration Implementation
- **Feature:** New 2-point battery calibration system
- **Impact:** More accurate battery voltage-to-percentage and remaining-capacity estimation
- **Details:**
  - Replaces previous single-point estimation with curve-fitting approach
  - Low-point and high-point reference calibration
  - Accessible via the battery menu
  - Persists in EEPROM across power cycles

### 3. Waterfall Disabled (Temporary)
- **Reason:** FLASH space constraint — the image sits at 61,280 B against the 61,440 B flasher limit (99.74%)
- **Impact:** Waterfall rendering disabled to reclaim FLASH space
- **Status:** The spectrum analyzer remains fully functional; only the temporal waterfall display layer is disabled
- **Future:** Will be re-enabled once ample FLASH space is reclaimed through further optimization

### 4. SysInf BUILD Page — Commit ID Now Embedded
- **Problem:** The `BUILD` page in `SysInf` (page 1) printed `N/A` for the build identifier. `system/version.c` hardcoded `const char BuildCommit[] = "N/A";` and nothing ever fed a real revision into it for N7SIX builds, so the on-radio build identity was meaningless.
- **Fix:**
  - `system/version.c` now guards the value with `#ifndef BUILD_COMMIT` / `#define BUILD_COMMIT "N/A"` / `#endif` and defines `const char BuildCommit[] = BUILD_COMMIT;`
  - `Makefile` (inside the `ENABLE_FEAT_N7SIX` block) resolves `BUILD_COMMIT` via `git rev-parse --short HEAD`, overridable from the command line, and falls back to `N/A` when git or the `.git` metadata is unavailable
  - `Makefile` CFLAGS propagate it as `-DBUILD_COMMIT=\"$(BUILD_COMMIT)\"`
  - `compile-with-docker.sh` and `compile-with-docker.bat` resolve the hash on the **host** and pass it to `make`, because `.dockerignore` excludes `.git/` from the Docker build context
- **Result:** The `SysInf` → `BUILD` page now reads e.g. `e34d81a`, matching the commit that produced the flashed image — useful for verifying what is actually on the radio.
- **Display path (unchanged):** `ui/menu.c` line ~1472 → `UI_PrintStringSmallNormal(BuildCommit, menu_item_x1 - 1, menu_item_x2, 6);` under the `BUILD` badge, below the PHT-converted build date and time.
- **Fallback:** Any build without git metadata (e.g. a zipped source tree) still compiles and shows `N/A` — no build breakage.

## Validation

- Build: `./compile-with-docker.sh ApeX` (success, no warnings)
- Build commit embedded: `e34d81a`
- Memory usage (with commit ID embedded):
  ```
  Memory Region      Used Size  Region Size   % Used
  FLASH                61280        61440     99.75%
  RAM                   3372         8192     41.16%
  ```
- Fallback verified: a build without git metadata (`.git/` excluded from the Docker context) resolves `BUILD_COMMIT := N/A`, still compiles cleanly, and measures 61,316 B / 99.80%.
- Note: embedding the real commit ID slightly reduces the image (61,280 B vs 61,316 B) by letting the linker pool the shared fixed strings; the `N/A` placeholder build is the 61,316 B figure quoted in the published v7.6.10 release notes.

## Impact
- **User Experience:** Modernized interface with improved navigation following UV-K1 Fusion design language
- **Battery Accuracy:** 2-point calibration provides more accurate battery percentage and remaining capacity
- **FLASH Management:** Waterfall disabled to meet strict 61,440 B flasher limit; spectrum analyzer remains operational
- **Forward Compatibility:** Waterfall can be re-enabled in future releases when FLASH is optimized
- **Traceability:** The SysInf BUILD page reports the real git commit hash, so the flashed image can be matched to an exact source revision

## CI Packaging Fix

- **Problem:** `.github/workflows/main.yml` uploaded `compiled-firmware/n7six.packed.bin`, but the build never produces that path. `compile-with-docker.sh` mounts `$PWD/build` into the container and the Makefile's `PACKED_BIN` is `build/ApeX/n7six.ApeX-k5.$(VERSION_STRING).packed.bin`, so `compiled-firmware/` did not exist and every workflow run uploaded an empty artifact.
- **Fix:** the upload step now globs `build/ApeX/*.packed.bin` (the real output) and sets `if-no-files-found: error` so a missing firmware image fails the job loudly instead of silently producing an empty artifact.
- **Result:** the `firmware-artifact` download from GitHub Actions now contains the flashable packed image, ready to attach to a GitHub Release.
- **Note:** the workflow needs no `fetch-depth: 0` checkout because `compile-with-docker.sh` resolves the commit hash on the runner host with `git rev-parse --short HEAD` before invoking Docker.

* **Reduced Hardware Settling Time:**

  * Minimized delay between frequency hops for faster, snappier scans.
* **Pre-calculated Smoothing Filter:**

  * 3-point smoothing/anti-aliasing filter is now calculated once after each scan, not during every draw.
* **Division-Free Drawing (Bresenham's Algorithm):**

  * Spectrum trace rendering uses Bresenham's line algorithm for efficient, division-free pixel plotting.
* **Batch Pixel Updates:**

  * Direct framebuffer writes update 8 pixels at once for maximum speed.

These changes make the spectrum scan and display feel instant and smooth, closely matching the responsiveness of high-end SDRs while remaining efficient on resource-constrained hardware.

### v7.6.0 (March 2026) — Spectrum Visual & Pulse Enhancements

Spectrum graph baseline, shade, and peak hold dot all moved down by 1 pixel for improved professional alignment and clarity.
RX audio pulse logic now amplifies the spectrum and noise grass upward, creating a heartbeat/pulse effect in sync with received voice.
Peak hold and shade positions are now visually aligned with the main trace.
All user documentation and guides updated to reflect these changes.

---

### 🟢 PERSISTENT SPECTRUM SETTINGS

16‑byte EEPROM region at address `0x1E80` reserved for spectrum state.
On exit the following fields are packed, checksummed, and written to flash:
step size, zoom count, frequency offset, listen/bandwidth mode,
trigger level, dB min/max, scan delay, backlight state.
On startup the data is validated and restored; invalid/corrupt storage
reverts to safe defaults.
Implementation encapsulated in `SPECTRUM_SaveSettings()` /
`SPECTRUM_LoadSettings()`; called from `DeInitSpectrum()` and
`APP_RunSpectrum()` respectively.

### 🔧 AUTO‑TRIGGER REFINEMENT & DRIFT FIX

`AutoTriggerLevel()` now initializes the trigger to a fixed baseline (150)
when first run instead of using the first scan peak.
Upward adjustments remain gradual (+1 per scan) while downward adjustments
occur up to −3 per scan, allowing rapid recovery after the strong signal
disappears.
RSSI_MAX_VALUE sentinel handled specially to avoid runaway thresholds when
automatic squelch is enabled.
Prevents desensitization during close‑range testing and improves robustness
across bursty traffic.

### 🔄 OTHER IMPROVEMENTS

Frequency offset value stays independent of step/zoom changes (completed in
7.6.0) and is now stored persistently.
Default offset ±600 kHz remains, and is preserved by persistence logic.
Minor refactor: new EEPROM constants in `spectrum.c`, documentation updated.

### 🔴 CRITICAL SECURITY & STABILITY FIXES

1. **Buffer Overflow Prevention (UART SendVersion)**
   Severity: CRITICAL | CVE Category: CWE-120 (Buffer Copy without Checking Size of Input)
   All unsafe strcpy() calls have been replaced with strncpy() and explicit null-termination for buffer safety, both in main firmware and all external example files.
   Policy:
   All string copies use strncpy(dest, src, sizeof(dest) - 1); dest[sizeof(dest) - 1] = '\0';
   No strcpy() remains in any C source file or example.
   Documentation and instructions updated to reflect this policy.
   Impact:
   Eliminates buffer overflow vulnerabilities from unsafe string copy operations
   Ensures robust, secure operation for all user input and external data
   Fully backward compatible; no API changes
   Testing:
   Validated with long input strings and fuzzing tools
   All builds pass with no strcpy() usage
   User Impact: Existing long DTMF sequences must be re-entered; protection going forward

3. **Interrupt State Management (Prevents IRQ Corruption)**
   Severity: HIGH | Bug Type: Logic Error
   Prevents unconditional __enable_irq() from corrupting system state by saving and conditionally restoring previous interrupt state.
   Impact:
   Symptom: Potential system instability during critical sections
   Manifestation: Rare crashes or unexpected behavior
   User Experience: Improved system reliability
   Mitigation: Proper interrupt state management implemented
   Testing: Verified with interrupt-heavy operations

4. **Frequency Input Overflow Protection**
   Severity: HIGH | Compiler Issue: Integer Overflow
   Multi-stage validation prevents frequency calculation overflows.
   Impact:
   Trigger: Entering very high frequencies
   Consequence: Invalid frequency settings, potential radio malfunction
   Duration: Persists until reset
   Mitigation: Bounds checking added to frequency input
   User Impact: Frequency input now safely clamped to valid ranges

5. **EEPROM Bounds and Alignment Validation**
   Severity: MEDIUM | Bug Type: Memory Corruption
   Checks alignment and prevents boundary crossing in EEPROM writes.
   Impact:
   Issue: Potential EEPROM corruption from misaligned writes
   Risk: Loss of calibration data
   Mitigation: Validation added to all EEPROM operations
   User Impact: EEPROM operations now safe and reliable

---

### 🟢 PROFESSIONAL SPECTRUM ANALYZER ENHANCEMENTS

6. **Peak Hold Visualization (Advanced Feature)**
   Category: UI/Display | Status: ENABLED (Production Ready)
   Implementation Details:
   ```
   Feature:        Max-Hold Trace + Exponential Decay
   Mechanism:      Dashed horizontal line showing signal peak history
   Decay Model:    Exponential (87% retention per sweep cycle)
   Time Constant:  ~30 seconds to baseline (natural "ghost" effect)
   Rendering:      Bayer-dithered grayscale (professional standard)
   CPU Impact:     +2% per frame (negligible)
   Memory Cost:    128 bytes (peakHold[128] array)
   ```
   Visual Behavior:
   When signal ends, peak line fades gradually (not instantly)
   Provides history of maximum signal at each frequency
   Helps identify intermittent transmissions and interference patterns
   Exponential Decay Formula:
   ```
   peakHold[i] = (peakHold[i] * 7) >> 3   // 12.5% reduction per sweep
   // At 60 Hz display refresh = ~13% fade per 16.7ms frame
   // Natural mathematically: e^(-t/2.1s) base
   ```

7. **Waterfall Data Integrity (Critical Fix)**
   Category: Signal Processing | Status: FIXED (Production Ready)
   Problem Identified:
   Previously, UpdateWaterfallQuick() was overwriting frequency-domain spectrum data with flat RSSI measurements every tick (60 Hz), destroying spectral resolution and creating visual "lines" across the waterfall.
   Solution Implemented:
   ```
   OLD BEHAVIOR (Buggy):
     for (i = 0; i < 128; i++) {
         waterfallHistory[waterfallIndex][i] = current_rssi;  // FLAT LINE!
     }
     waterfallIndex = (waterfallIndex + 1) % 16;
   NEW BEHAVIOR (Fixed):
     waterfallIndex = (waterfallIndex + 1) % 16;
     // NOTE: Heavy path (every 6 ticks) handles spectrum data generation
     // This function only advances the circular buffer pointer
   ```
   Impact:
   Result: Waterfall displays full frequency-domain spectrum at each time step
   Visual Quality: Clear signal traces visible in temporal (waterfall) domain
   Data Integrity: No destructive overwrites; circular buffer preserves all measurements
   CPU Impact: Reduced (no per-tick memcpy operations)
   Memory Pattern: Proper circular indexing (0-15 rows, wrapping)

8. **Spectrum Display 3-Point Smoothing**
   Category: Signal Processing | Status: VERIFIED (Stable)
   Algorithm:
   ```c
   smoothed[i] = (rssiHistory[i-1] + 2*rssiHistory[i] + rssiHistory[i+1]) / 4
   ```
   Characteristics:
   Reduces noise grass (visual clutter) while maintaining frequency precision
   Expert-grade anti-aliasing for monochrome displays
   Mathematically stable (linear FIR filter, no phase shift)

9. **16-Level Bayer Dithering (Waterfall Rendering)**
   Category: Display | Status: PRODUCTION STANDARD
   Dithering Pattern:
   ```
   Professional 4×4 Bayer Matrix:
     {0,  8,  2, 10}
     {12, 4, 14,  6}
     {3, 11,  1,  9}
     {15, 7, 13,  5}
   ```
   Implementation:
   Spatial dithering across monochrome ST7565 LCD
   128×64 pixel display rendered as 16-shade grayscale
   Critical for waterfall visual quality (temporal signal history)

10. **RSSI-to-dBm Conversion Pipeline**
    Category: Measurement | Status: OPTIMIZED
    Processing Chain:
    ```
    BK4819_RSSI (16-bit)
      ↓
    Linear scaling to 0-100 units
      ↓
    dBm conversion (-130 to -50 dBm range)
      ↓
    Non-linear exponential boost (emphasize weak signals)
      ↓
    Display pixel mapping (0-40 pixel height)
      ↓
    ST7565 framebuffer (monochrome)
    ```
    Calibration Points:
    136 MHz: -2 dBm correction (front-end loss)
    144 MHz: 0 dBm reference point
    430 MHz: +8 dBm correction (UHF attenuation)
    520 MHz: +12 dBm correction (high-frequency rolloff)

## KNOWN ISSUES & LIMITATIONS

**Issue #1: Spectrum Grass Animation Slows After 2-3 Seconds**
Severity: LOW (Design behavior, not a bug)
Manifestation: Initial animated noise pattern gradually becomes static
Root Cause: EMA noise floor filter mathematically converges (signal averaging works as designed)
Workaround: Restart spectrum scan (press [* SCAN]) to reset
Engineering Note: This is normal behavior in professional spectrum analyzers. The filter smooths noise to show clean signal structure.
```
// In heavy path (every 6 ticks):
noisePersistence[i] = (noisePersistence[i] * 7 + (baseFloor + roll)) >> 3;
// With zero-mean input (roll ∈ [-4, +4]), state converges to baseFloor
// This is mathematically correct for averaging filters
```

**Issue #2: Waterfall Shows Limited Rows During RX Lock**
Severity: LOW (Firmware limitation)
Manifestation: Waterfall displays only 3-4 lines when signal detected
Cause: RX mode freezes spectrum updates; only historical data rendered
Workaround: Use Listen mode offset frequency (Menu → OffSet) to allow scanning
Planned Fix: v7.7.0 (estimated Q2 2026)

**Issue #3: Peak Hold Fades When Signal Ends**
Severity: NONE (Expected behavior)
Manifestation: Peak trace immediately decays when signal drops to noise
Explanation: Exponential decay formula requires active signal to maintain value; noise floor has zero mean
Expected Behavior: Peak shows maximum while signal present; fades to baseline after TX ends
Workaround: None needed (design is correct)

Quansheng UV-K5, K5(8)/K6 Custom Firmware - ApeX Edition (Version 1 Only)

[!IMPORTANT] THIS FIRMWARE IS DESIGNED FOR QUANSHENG UV-K5, K5(8)/K6 VERSION 1 ONLY

Compatible With: Quansheng UV-K5 (v1), K5(8) (v1), K6 (v1)

NOT Compatible With: Quansheng 5R or any other unsupported radio models

Use this firmware only on the supported models listed below. Using this on incompatible radios can permanently brick them.

Overview

This is a professional-grade, feature-rich custom firmware for the Quansheng UV-K5, K5(8), and K6 handheld transceivers on the supported hardware revisions listed below. ApeX Edition is a basic Bandscope edition with Spectrum Analyzer + Waterfall, featuring improved stability, enhanced UI/UX, and security improvements.

This repository is a fork of Egzumer custom firmware, which merged OneOfEleven custom firmware with fagci spectrum analyzer. It is based on DualTachyon's open-source firmware here.

[!NOTE] EN - About Chirp, as many others firmwares, you need to use a dedicated driver available on [this repository](https://github.com/armel f4hwn/uv-k5-chirp-driver).

FR - A propos de Chirp, comme beaucoup d'autres firmwares, vous devez utiliser un pilote dédié disponible sur [ce dépôt](https://github.com/armel f4hwn/uv-k5-chirp-driver).

[!WARNING] HARDWARE COMPATIBILITY - CRITICAL:

EN - THIS FIRMWARE IS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE SUPPORTED UV-K5 / K5(8) / K6 HARDWARE REVISIONS LISTED BELOW. Using this firmware on unsupported models such as 5R or any other incompatible hardware MAY PERMANENTLY BRICK YOUR RADIO with no recovery option except factory repair.

THIS FIRMWARE HAS NO REAL BRAIN. PLEASE USE YOUR OWN. Use this firmware at your own risk (entirely). There is absolutely no guarantee that it will work in any way shape or form on your radio(s) even if you have a supported model; it may still brick your radio(s) due to user error, in which case, you'd need to buy another radio. Anyway, have fun.

[!CAUTION] EN - I recommend to backup your eeprom with k5prog before playing with alternative firmwares for any supported UV-K5/K5(8)/K6 model. It's a good reflex to have.

FR - Je recommande de sauvegarder votre eeprom avec k5prog avant de jouer avec des firmwares alternatifs pour tout modèle UV-K5/K5(8)/K6 pris en charge. C'est un bon réflexe à avoir.

Manual

Up to date manual is available in the [Wiki section](https://github.com/armel f4hwn/uv-k5-firmware-custom/wiki)

Radio performance

Please note that the Quansheng UV-Kx radios are not professional quality transceivers, their performance is strictly limited. The RX front end has no track-tuned band pass filtering at all, and so are wide band/wide open to any and all signals over a large frequency range.

Using the radio in high intensity RF environments will most likely make reception anything but easy (AM mode will suffer far more than FM ever will), the receiver simply doesn't have a great dynamic range, which results in distorted AM audio with stronger RX'ed signals. There is nothing more anyone can do in firmware/software to improve that, once the RX gain adjustment I do (AM fix) reaches the hardwares limit, your AM RX audio will be all but non-existent (just like Quansheng's firmware). On the other hand, FM RX audio will/should be fine.

But, they are nice toys for the price, fun to play with.

Compiler

arm-none-eabi GCC version 10.3.1 is recommended, which is the current version on Ubuntu 22.04.03 LTS. Other versions may generate a flash file that is too big. You can get an appropriate version from: https://developer.arm.com/downloads/-/gnu-rm

clang may be used but isn't fully supported. Resulting binaries may also be bigger. You can get it from: https://releases.llvm.org/download.html

Building

Github Codespace build method

This is the least demanding option as you don't have to install enything on your computer. All you need is Github account.

  1. Go to https://github.com/armel f4hwn/uv-k5-firmware-custom
  2. Click green Code button
  3. Change tab from Local to Codespace
  4. Click green Create codespace on main button
  1. Open Makefile, edit build options and save changes
  2. If necessary, open compile-with-docker.sh, edit build versions and save changes
  3. Run in terminal window
    • ./compile-with-docker.sh bandscope to compile bandscope version
    • ./compile-with-docker.sh broadcast to compile broadcast version
    • ./compile-with-docker.sh voxless to compile voxless version
    • ./compile-with-docker.sh all to compile all versions
    • ./compile-with-docker.sh custom to compile only with Makefile build options
  4. Open folder compiled-firmware
  5. Right click firmware.packed.bin
  6. Click Download, now you should have a firmware on your computer that you can proceed to flash on your radio. You can use online flasher

Docker build method

If you have docker installed you can use compile-with-docker.bat (Windows) or compile-with-docker.sh (Linux/Mac), the output files are created in compiled-firmware folder. This method gives significantly smaller binaries, I've seen differences up to 1kb, so it can fit more functionalities this way. The challenge can be (or not) installing docker itself.

[!TIP] On Linux/Mac, you may need to uncomment and customize the DOCKER_NETWORK environment variable at the beginning of the compile-with-docker.sh script. Note: this can introduce security risks by removing network isolation. However, if you encounter issues and are using a specific network environment (with a proxy or a firewall), this may help.

Windows environment build method

  1. Open windows command line and run:
    winget install -e -h git.git Python.Python.3.8 GnuWin32.Make
    winget install -e -h Arm.GnuArmEmbeddedToolchain -v "10 2021.10"

  2. Close command line, open a new one and run:
    pip install --user --upgrade pip
    pip install crcmod
    mkdir c:\projects & cd /D c:/projects
    git clone https://github.com/armel f4hwn/uv-k5-firmware-custom.git

  3. From now on you can build the firmware by going to c:\projects\uv-k5-firmware-custom and running win_make.bat or by running a command line:
    cd /D c:\projects\uv-k5-firmware-custom
    win_make.bat

  4. To reset the repository and pull new changes run (!!! it will delete all your changes !!!):
    cd /D c:\projects\uv-k5-firmware-custom
    git reset --hard & git clean -fd & git pull

I've left some notes in the win_make.bat file to maybe help with stuff.
