Good to know about the UV-5R

UV-5R differences by firmware and memory layout
Where and how the transmit limits are stored depending on the firmware version of Baofeng UV-5R radios, and how RadioCloud handles each case. (Korean only)

BFB298 / HN5RV011: TX limits not taking effect, and what we cannot fix
Cases where the limits are saved but transmit is still not restricted, and what this service currently cannot fix.

  • These limits set the transmit range in VFO mode (direct frequency entry). They may not apply to frequencies stored in memory channels.
  • Firmware older than BFB291 (old layout) and later firmware (new layout) store the limits in different places; RadioCloud tells them apart automatically. Firmware tags of the UV-82 and BF-F8HP families are recognized too.
  • Newer radios such as HN5RV011 (BFB298) only save the limits when the whole settings area is written, so RadioCloud writes it the same way CHIRP does. Writing is blocked on radios that return different values on every read.
  • This feature has been verified on a real radio with read, write and read-back.
