# Changes
**Full Changelog**: https://github.com/nicodotgit/uv-k5-firmware-custom/compare/v4.5...v4.6

- **Performance & Flash Optimizations:**
  - Maximized available flash space by replacing `if/else` blocks with ternary operations, converting power-of-two modulo math into efficient bitwise AND operations, and eliminating redundant boolean comparisons. This heavily reduces branching overhead and entirely avoids software division instructions without altering any behavioral logic.
  - Optimized the Time-Out Timer (TOT) alert phase execution. Introduced a tick guard so that backlight toggling and alert tones only process once per tick, rather than thrashing the CPU millions of times per second. Fixed associated zombie timeout states.
  - Unified the ST7565 LCD glitch recovery sequences to further reduce the driver's flash memory footprint.
- **Bug Fixes & Stability:**
  - Fixed a critical shifting bug in the CHIRP `F_LOCK` menu where building specific firmware flavors (e.g., the Pro Edition, which lacks CA/PMR/GMRS band plans) would misalign the dropdown index and unintentionally trigger 'UNLOCK ALL'.
  - The CHIRP driver now auto-detects predefined firmware flavors and dynamically trims the `FLOCK_LIST` dropdown. Introduced a fallback for custom user-compiled firmwares: 3 new checkboxes appear in CHIRP (using previously unused EEPROM bits at `0x1FF2`), allowing users to manually specify their lock plans for perfect scaling.
  - Resolved an aggressive runaway loop in the status bar that caused continuous, full-speed SPI transfers to the display during transmission. Timers now strictly update at 1Hz, and heavy full-screen redraws in the audio bar have been replaced with highly targeted single-line blits (`ST7565_BlitLine`), preserving display contrast and freeing up system resources.
  - Enforced a strict TX lockout during the repeater tail squelch (End of Transmission) sequence to prevent radio state and UI loop desynchronization.

Enjoy,
Nicolás Valdés.

💡 For Quansheng K5 users with an SA818 based hotspot, you'll need to test with your own custom builds, sorry.

# Changes
**Full Changelog**: https://github.com/nicodotgit/uv-k5-firmware-custom/compare/v4.4.2...v4.5

- **Hardware & Security Fixes:**
  - Implemented a critical fix to prevent the Aircopy clone mode from overwriting and corrupting the protected EEPROM hardware calibration sector by enforcing strict `0x1DC0` boundaries.
  - Corrected the TX output power interpolation math so that wattage smoothly scales across band edges, utilizing standard C integer promotion to safely prevent unsigned overflow.
  - Replaced the erratic TOT (Time-Out Timer) while-loop calibration with a rock-solid, deterministic hardware SysTick timer, perfectly synchronizing warning beeps and LED pulses to 1Hz/2Hz.
  - Fixed a major LCD `DrawLine` failure during screen-clearing operations.
  - Ensured cross-context hardware interrupt safety by applying `volatile` declarations to asynchronous core variables (e.g. `gCurrentFunction`, `gDTMF_RX_live_timeout`).
- **Memory & Performance Optimizations:**
  - Implemented high-speed SRAM caching for the `BK4819` SPI control registers (`REG_31` for VOX/switching and `REG_7E` for AGC/bypass), completely eliminating notoriously slow read-modify-write delays during RX/TX transitions.
  - Stripped unnecessary `volatile` qualifiers in `init.c` so GCC can optimize the boot memory sequence into highly efficient hardware multiple-load/store instructions (`ldmia`/`stmia`), speeding up boot and saving flash.
  - Explicitly discarded unused C++ `.eh_frame` and `.fini` linker sections to recover crucial flash space.
  - Conditionally wrapped the `gFont3x5` array to immediately strip it from firmware variants that don't utilize it.
  - Deduplicated massive switch blocks in menu handlers, simplified string assignments, and centralized DTMF pattern matching to aggressively reduce the footprint.
- **Build System:**
  - Bumped version to `v4.5` and cleanly updated the CHIRP python driver namespace and changelog.
  - Upgraded the `compile.sh` scripts to fully leverage multi-core parallel execution (`make -s -j$(nproc)`), radically accelerating compile times across all variants.
  - Injected `-Wl,--print-memory-usage` into the linker flags to continuously monitor RAM and flash ceilings.

Enjoy,
Nicolás Valdés.

README

Open re-implementation of the Quansheng UV-K5/K6/5R v2.1.27 firmware

This repository is a fork of the Original F4HWN firmware, which itself builds upon the Egzumer custom firmware (a merge of OneOfEleven's custom firmware and fagci's spectrum analyzer), plus a few of my own changes and bugfixes.

All is a cloned and customized version of DualTachyon's open firmware found here ... a cool achievement !

[!NOTE] About Chirp, as many others firmwares, you need to use a dedicated driver available in this repository.

[!WARNING] THIS FIRMWARE HAS NO REAL BRAIN. PLEASE USE YOUR OWN. Use this firmware at your own risk (entirely). There is absolutely no guarantee that it will work in any way shape or form on your radio(s), it may even brick your radio(s), in which case, you'd need to buy another radio. Anyway, have fun.

[!CAUTION] I recommend to backup your eeprom with k5prog before playing with alternative firmwares. It's a good reflex to have.

Custom changes on this fork

  • Memory & Performance Optimizations: Replaced the external printf library with a minimalist custom formatter to aggressively save flash space. Converted primitives to #define macros, replaced MENU_GetLimits with a packed static look-up table, abbreviated labels (e.g., "TX LOCK"), conditionally stripped unused fonts and menu strings, and deduplicated large switch blocks. Implemented SRAM caching for BK4819 SPI control registers (VOX, AGC) to dramatically speed up TX/RX transitions, and optimized the init.c multiple-load boot sequence.
  • Firmware & Security Fixes: Enforced TX lock across global frequencies to prevent F-Lock bypass vulnerabilities. Added bounds checking on the FSK buffer, corrected 108MHz bounds checks, resolved compander display bugs, and fixed an LCD DrawLine screen-clearing bug. Implemented a critical fix to prevent Aircopy from overwriting and corrupting the EEPROM calibration sector, corrected TX output power interpolation math for safe scaling, and replaced the broken TOT loop counter with a rock-solid deterministic SysTick timer.
  • UI & Display Enhancements: Added animated charging text, optimized display refresh logic, and added a perfectly centered small font fallback for FM radio and AirCopy. Tweaked ST7565 inverse display command and renamed menu entries.
  • Custom Build (Pro edition): Added a streamlined build target that enables Spectrum Analyzer, FM Radio, custom menu layout, K5 Viewer, and AM fix, but strictly removes Vox, Aircopy, NOAA, Rescue Ops, Games, PMR/GMRS, Alarms, and DTMF Calling to fit the 60KB limit.
  • Code Quality & Build System: Removed extensive dead code and commented-out blocks. Discarded unused .eh_frame/.fini linker sections, ensured cross-context interrupt safety with volatile declarations, and updated the CHIRP driver to fit as an internal custom module. Improved the build scripts to use multi-core parallel compilation with real-time linker memory profiling.

Radio performance

Please note that the Quansheng UV-Kx radios are not professional quality transceivers, their performance is strictly limited. The RX front end has no track-tuned band pass filtering at all, and so are wide band/wide open to any and all signals over a large frequency range.

Using the radio in high intensity RF environments will most likely make reception anything but easy (AM mode will suffer far more than FM ever will), the receiver simply doesn't have a great dynamic range, which results in distorted AM audio with stronger RX'ed signals. There is nothing more anyone can do in firmware/software to improve that, once the RX gain adjustment I do (AM fix) reaches the hardwares limit, your AM RX audio will be all but non-existent (just like Quansheng's firmware). On the other hand, FM RX audio will/should be fine.

But, they are nice toys for the price, fun to play with.

Compiler

Note: This is the recommendation from the F4HWN devs. I personally used the rolling release versions from the Arch Linux repositories and had no problems.

arm-none-eabi GCC version 10.3.1 is recommended, which is the current version on Ubuntu 22.04.03 LTS. Other versions may generate a flash file that is too big. You can get an appropriate version from: https://developer.arm.com/downloads/-/gnu-rm

clang may be used but isn't fully supported. Resulting binaries may also be bigger. You can get it from: https://releases.llvm.org/download.html

Building

Environment Setup

To compile the firmware natively, you need the arm-none-eabi-gcc toolchain and make installed on your system, along with Python for the CRC checksum generation script.

Linux / macOS (Debian/Ubuntu example)

  1. Install the toolchain and dependencies:
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install gcc-arm-none-eabi build-essential python3 python3-pip
    pip3 install --user --upgrade pip
    pip3 install crcmod

  2. Clone the repository:
    git clone https://github.com/nicodotgit/uv-k5-firmware-custom.git
    cd uv-k5-firmware-custom

Compiling

You can build the firmware using the provided compile.sh wrapper script which simplifies compiling different firmware variants. The output files will be created in the compiled-firmware folder.

  1. Ensure the script is executable:
    chmod +x compile.sh

  2. Run the build script with your desired variant:
./compile.sh pro # Compiles the custom Pro build
./compile.sh bandscope # Compiles the Bandscope version
./compile.sh broadcast # Compiles the Broadcast version
./compile.sh basic # Compiles the Basic version
./compile.sh rescueops # Compiles the RescueOps version
./compile.sh game # Compiles the Game version
./compile.sh all # Compiles all the above variants

Once compiled, you'll find the .packed.bin file in the compiled-firmware directory. You can proceed to flash this file onto your radio using the online flasher.
